Evri: A Journey of Innovation and Growth

About Evri

Evri is one of the UK’s leading parcel delivery companies, serving millions of customers and delivering over 700 million parcels a year. Our friendly team of over 20,000 couriers and 14,000+ ParcelShops and Lockers ensure that sending a parcel is convenient and affordable, while our state-of-the-art hubs and depots continue to expand our capabilities both nationally and internationally. With a vision to create responsible delivery experiences for everyone, Evri has rapidly become the partner of choice for major UK retailers and fast-growing online platforms, such as Vinted and Etsy.

Our Journey: From Grattan Mail Order to Evri

Evri’s story began nearly 50 years ago in 1974 when we were founded as Grattan Mail Order in Bradford, Yorkshire. We introduced home delivery, a service that would become central to our evolution. Over the decades, we have adapted and expanded, growing to meet the demands of a rapidly changing market. Several name changes marked key milestones in our development, culminating in the rebrand to Evri in March 2022.

Here’s a brief look at our journey:

  • 1974: Grattan Mail Order launched in Bradford, pioneering home delivery services.
  • 1988: The Next Directory launched, and 48-hour delivery became the new standard.
  • 1999: Grattan merged with Freeman’s Catalogue Company to form Parcelnet, marking the beginning of our transformation into a major player in the parcel delivery sector.
  • 2004: Online parcel tracking was introduced, helping customers track their deliveries in real-time.
  • 2008: Parcelnet rebranded as Hermes Parcelnet Ltd, establishing closer ties with its German counterpart.
  • 2010: The first ParcelShop opened, offering customers a convenient place to send parcels.
  • 2014: Hermes became the first UK delivery company to offer a 7-day-a-week service, expanding internationally and offering solutions for small businesses.
  • 2018: The rebrand to “The Parcel People” brought new branding and a commitment to sustainability with the introduction of low-carbon biomethane trucks.
  • 2020: As the pandemic accelerated e-commerce growth, we introduced green fleet initiatives, including biomethane CNG trucks and electric vehicles in London.
  • 2021: We launched a new ESG strategy, focusing on environmental, social, and governance factors.
  • 2022: Hermes officially rebranded to Evri and launched the Barnsley ‘superhub,’ the greenest site in our network.
  • 2023: Evri continues to grow, becoming the UK’s largest dedicated parcel delivery company.

A Strategic Approach to Growth

Over the last five years, Evri has tripled the size of its business and is on track to double it again in the next five years. Our business model, designed for flexibility and scalability, allows us to stay ahead of market trends and meet the increasing demand for parcel deliveries.

Key to our strategy is our focus on technological investment and infrastructure. Over £130 million has been invested in the last two years to expand our network and capabilities, including the opening of our 340,000 square foot superhub in Barnsley, the largest parcel distribution centre in Europe.

Our Vision and Mission

At Evri, our mission is clear: we aim to offer the most convenient way to send, receive, and return parcels, without costing the earth. Our values guide our efforts:

  • Do the right thing – For our people, communities, and the planet.
  • Be dynamic – Seize opportunities, embrace change, and innovate.
  • Celebrate cost leadership – Spend wisely and invest in our future.
  • Deliver for customers – Go the extra mile to care for every parcel.

Evolving with the Market

The e-commerce market has grown exponentially, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are evolving alongside it. Evri partners with more than 700 retailers, including the UK’s top 100, delivering for over 12 million customers weekly. Our ability to offer speed, value, and service has made us the preferred partner for major UK brands like Next, John Lewis, M&S, and ASOS, as well as emerging online platforms like Vinted and Etsy.

Infrastructure and Technological Advancements

To support our continued growth, Evri is investing heavily in both physical infrastructure and cutting-edge technology. Our new Barnsley superhub is just one example of our commitment to capacity and efficiency. At 340,000 square feet, it is the largest and most technologically advanced parcel distribution centre in Europe.

We also continue to enhance our technology, providing innovative features like 1-hour ETAs, market-leading returns solutions, packageless returns, and customer verification to improve the customer experience. In 2023, Evri introduced a new chatbot that has significantly increased customer satisfaction, connecting 47% more customers to advisors when automated solutions are not sufficient.

The Future of Evri

Evri’s journey is far from over. As we continue to evolve and adapt to an ever-changing market, our focus remains on driving growth, sustainability, and customer satisfaction. We are excited about the future and our ability to lead the way in creating responsible delivery experiences that benefit everyone, everywhere.
