Nedbank Getting Started

Nedbank Getting Started: Digital Banking, Cards, Account Switching, Nedbank Connect and PayShap

Article purpose

This article explains how Nedbank clients can complete common getting-started tasks using the Nedbank Money app or Online Banking. It covers creating a Nedbank ID, activating a bank card, switching a salary or debit orders, managing Tap and Go, setting up a Nedbank Connect preset plan, referring a friend to Nedbank Connect, enabling account notifications, authorising a DebiCheck mandate, making a PayShap request and registering a ShapID.

Supported channels

  • Money app: Supported for all tasks in this article.

  • Online Banking: Supported for most tasks in this article.

  • Money app only: Referring a friend to Nedbank Connect.

  • Other channels for DebiCheck authorisation: ATM, Cellphone Banking, the Nedbank Contact Centre or a Nedbank branch.

Important security guidance

  • Never ask a client to share their Nedbank ID password, app PIN, ATM PIN, profile PIN, card PIN, one-time PIN or Approve-It response in a conversation.

  • Guide the client to enter security information only in the official Nedbank Money app, Online Banking or another authorised Nedbank channel.

  • If the client does not recognise a DebiCheck mandate or other transaction, do not advise them to authorise it. They should review it carefully and contact Nedbank through an official support channel if needed.

Common client questions

Can I register with a passport?
Yes. Online Banking supports registration using a South African ID number or a foreign passport number.

Why do I need Approve-It?

Important guidance while switching

  • Start the switch as soon as practical after the salary has been paid, allowing time before the next collection cycle.

  • Do not close the previous bank account until Nedbank confirms that the debit orders have been switched and they have processed successfully from the new account.

  • Keep enough money in both the old account and the Nedbank account while the switch is in progress.

  • A late switch request may take effect only in the following debit-order cycle, depending on the service provider’s processing dates.

  • Some service providers may not allow Nedbank to switch a debit order. Nedbank will advise the client if this happens.

  • Joint or savings account debit orders may require permission from all relevant parties.

  • Remember debit orders that run only annually or infrequently, such as certain licence or insurance payments.

  • Insufficient funds can cause rejected debit orders, which may attract fees and could affect the client’s credit profile.

11. Register a ShapID

What is a ShapID?

A ShapID is an alias linked to a bank account. It can be used to make and receive real-time PayShap payments without giving the payer the full bank account number. For an individual or small business, a ShapID is usually the primary cellphone number registered with the bank.

Using the Money app

  1. Log in using an app PIN, fingerprint or Nedbank ID.

  2. Select the PayShap widget.

  3. Select Manage ShapID.

  4. Select Register a ShapID.

  5. Choose the account to link to the ShapID.

  6. Select Register.

Using Online Banking

  6. Select Register.

If the cellphone number is already registered at another bank

A cellphone number already registered as the default ShapID at another participating bank cannot simultaneously be the default ShapID at Nedbank. The client may receive a bank-qualified ShapID, such as a cellphone number followed by @Nedbank. To make the cellphone number the default ShapID at Nedbank, the client must first deregister the default ShapID at the other bank and complete any required deregistration at Nedbank before registering it again.

Guidance for the AI Agent

Response behaviour

  • First identify the task the client wants to complete.

  • Ask whether the client is using the Money app or Online Banking when the steps differ.

  • Give only the steps for the selected task and channel unless the client asks for alternatives.

  • Present one numbered sequence in the correct order.

  • Do not claim that an action has completed unless the client confirms completion or a connected tool returns a successful result.

  • If the client cannot see a menu option, first confirm that they selected the correct account, card or widget and are using the expected channel.

  • If the client reports an error, an unrecognised mandate, suspected fraud or a security concern, stop the standard instructions and direct them to an official Nedbank assistance channel.
