Repatriation Services: Coverage and Limitations
Bupa Global provides extensive repatriation services, ensuring individuals receive the necessary support during medical emergencies while traveling. Understanding the key aspects of these services helps policyholders make informed decisions about their healthcare coverage.
Repatriation Coverage Bupa Global covers the transport costs for repatriation to:
-
The policyholder’s specified country of nationality (as stated in the application form), or
-
The specified country of residence.
This coverage extends to the return journey to the original location of transfer, but only when pre-approved by Bupa Global. The reimbursement for return transport is determined by the lower cost between:
-
A reasonable land or sea travel cost, or
-
An economy class air ticket.
Other related expenses, such as additional travel costs and hotel accommodation, are not covered under this benefit.
Alternative Transportation Considerations
In cases where ambulance transportation may not be necessary, Bupa Global allows for taxi fare reimbursement, provided that prior approval is obtained.
Additionally, medical repatriation requests are subject to medical assessment. If deemed inappropriate, Bupa Global will arrange for evacuation to the nearest suitable medical facility instead. Once the individual has been stabilized, repatriation may be arranged based on medical recommendations.
Travel Support for Accompanying Persons
For policyholders requiring repatriation or evacuation, Bupa Global covers reasonable travel costs for a close relative (spouse/partner, parent, child, brother, or sister) when:
-
Assistance is required for boarding or disembarking transport.
-
The transfer exceeds 1,000 miles (1,600 km).
-
No medical escort is available.
-
The policyholder has a serious acute illness.
Return travel costs for the accompanying person are covered, subject to pre-authorization, and are reimbursed at the lower cost between a reasonable land/sea journey or an economy class air ticket. However, this benefit does not apply for out-patient treatment travel.
Transfer of Children
Children under 18 years old are eligible for travel coverage in the event of a parent's evacuation or repatriation, provided that:
-
The evacuation or repatriation is medically necessary.
-
A parent or guardian is traveling with them.
-
They would otherwise be left without a guardian.
Compassionate Visit Benefits
If a policyholder experiences a sudden illness or accident requiring hospitalization for at least five days, Bupa Global covers economy-class travel costs for a close relative to visit. This benefit is available for up to five trips per lifetime, with each trip capped at:
-
EUR 1,875
-
GBP 1,500
-
USD 2,550
Additionally, a living allowance is provided for up to 10 days per policy year, covering:
-
EUR 125 per day
-
GBP 100 per day
-
USD 170 per day
This benefit is only valid when pre-approved and does not apply if repatriation or evacuation occurs during the compassionate visit.
Living Allowance for Accompanying Relatives
If an accompanying relative is approved to travel with a policyholder following an evacuation, Bupa Global provides a living allowance for up to 10 days (or until discharge, whichever is earlier). The daily reimbursement rates are:
-
EUR 125
-
GBP 100
-
USD 170
Emergency Transportation: Air and Road Ambulances
Bupa Global covers emergency transport services when medically necessary:
-
Local air ambulance for short-distance (up to 100 miles/160 km) transport between hospitals.
-
Local road ambulance for emergency hospital transfers or home-to-hospital transport.
However, transportation may not be available in certain high-risk locations, such as war zones or remote areas, and mountain rescue services are excluded.
Repatriation of Mortal Remains
In the unfortunate event of a policyholder’s passing while abroad, Bupa Global covers transportation costs for repatriating mortal remains to the home country or specified country of residence. This benefit includes statutory arrangements such as:
-
Cremation and urn transport, or
-
Embalming and a zinc coffin, as required by airline authorities.
However, additional costs related to funeral services, burial caskets, or transport for accompanying persons are not covered.
Exclusions and Limitations
Bupa Global imposes several exclusions on repatriation and travel-related benefits, including but not limited to:
-
Costs for out-patient treatment travel.
-
Costs for funeral services beyond statutory transport requirements.
-
Travel expenses for relatives accompanying out-patient treatments.
-
Evacuations from areas deemed unsafe for entry by emergency medical teams.
Understanding these benefits and limitations helps policyholders effectively utilize Bupa Global’s services while planning for unforeseen medical emergencies abroad.
